Toulouse registered an important victory in the Europa League after overcoming high-flying Liverpool on Thursday. It was an action-packed encounter, with plenty of entertainment for the supporters. The five-goal thriller finished 3-2 in favour of the French side – a result not many saw it coming. However, Toulouse were full value for it, as they created numerous chances and limited Liverpool’s attacking threat on the night.

Promising young Liverpool talent Harvey Elliott gave an honest opinion of the team’s performance during the 3-2 loss they suffered against Toulouse in the Europa League. During the end of the match, Jarell Quansah’s goal was ruled out by VAR. When asked whether the disallowed goal makes it hard to take, Elliott, quoted by the club’s website, said after the match, “It is. In all fairness, it just summed up our night and I don’t think we deserved anything from tonight.”

He added: “It was just one of those games when nothing was going for us but we did not really deserve to win or draw at the end of the day. We’ve got to take it on the chin, we’ll reflect and make sure it doesn’t happen again. With VAR and stuff you can never celebrate too early and we were just waiting around to see what the decision was. They gave it and then they didn’t give it so I’m not too sure what was going on. I’m not the referee, I’m just here to play, so we were waiting for the decision and unfortunately it was disallowed.”

We deserved to not really come away with anything: Harvey Elliott

He also spoke about how the team were not able to be at their best in the attacking part of the pitch. When asked how frustrating it was that it didn’t work out well in the final third, He said, “Definitely. They sat back and made it very hard for us. We only had limited opportunities and it was just down to us to take them. I had a few opportunities I felt I could have done better with and we had a few more, but as I said, we weren’t really there throughout the whole game and we deserved to not really come away with anything. We just need to keep going and making the right decisions and the right choices in the next game. We will reflect on this one and make sure we put that into the next one.”

Liverpool now have one more game before the international break – a home match against Brentford in the Premier League. Speaking about the importance of winning that game before the break, Elliott said, “There’s nothing better than a win to go into the international break and that’s what we want to do. We will fly home tonight, come in tomorrow and prepare straight away and make sure we are right, because it’s not going to be an easy game, no game in the Premier League is, and they will come at us full throttle. We need to make sure we put things right and go into the international break with a positive result hopefully.”
