Australia will be looking to seal their place in the knockout stage of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 when they take on Syria in a Group B fixture at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Thursday. The Socceroos secured a 2-0 victory over India in their opening fixture of the tournament on Saturday and are sitting at the summit of the four-team table with three points to their name. Nosour Qasioun, on the other hand, played out a goalless draw against Uzbekistan last time out. Meanwhile, the previous encounter between these two nations was back in 2019 in the group stage of the last edition of the tournament, where the Socceroos prevailed 3-2 thanks to Tom Rogic’s 93rd-minute winner.

Syria started the match against Uzbekistan on a positive note, with the likes of Ibrahim Hesar and Ammar Ramadan testing their luck from outside the box. However, as the game progressed, White Wolves started to take control of the proceedings and the first real save of the match was made by the Syria custodian Ahmad Madania six minutes from time, when substitute Abbosbek Fayzullaev tested the 34-year-old with a fine long-ranger. Srecko Katanec’s side finished the match with the bulk share of the possession (66%) but Hector Cuper’s men were remarkably organised, holding their opponents to just two attempts on target. Meanwhile, it was Nosour Qasioun’s third successive draw in all competitions.

Australia, on the other hand, had to dig deep against India in their opening match at the weekend. Socceroos were left frustrated in the first half as the Blue Tigers put up a solid defensive performance but five minutes into the restart, Jackson Irvine capitalised on a goalkeeping error by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to break the deadlock. And then, 17 minutes from time, the 2015 champions doubled the lead thanks to Jordan Bos’ close range tap-in from Riley McGree’s assist. Though Graham Arold was far from impressed with his team’s performance, Socceroos have now extended their winning run to five games, with a combined scoreline of 14-0.
