Switzerland have recorded four wins and as many draws from their eight Group I games so far and are in a strong position to earn a ticket to Germany for the upcoming European Championship. A-Team have won only one of their last five fixtures, and that lone success came against Andorra in September thanks to three unanswered goals from Cedric Itten, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri. Murat Yakin’s side shared the spoils against Israel in the mid-week despite taking the lead through Ruben Vargas’ 36th-minute opener. It was their 21st goal from eight group fixtures and only Portugal (32) have scored more in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Swiss were seemingly on course to secure all three points against Israel, but Shon Weissman’s 88th-minute equaliser made it all square at Pancho Arena.
Kosovo, on the other hand, edged past Israel last Sunday and kept their slim hopes of qualification alive. Milt Rashica’s lone goal four minutes from time helped Dardanians secure their second group stage victory of the campaign and now they need to pull off an upset in Basel to have any chance of qualification. Kosovo, who have never qualified for a major international competition in their brief seven-year history as a FIFA member, are currently raked 105th in the world, 95 places below Red Crosses. Meanwhile, on a positive note, Dardanians have managed to earn draws in their last two encounters against the Swiss.
