The 58-year-old former World Cup winner (1990) took charge of the Asian giants in February will be looking to continue the good work done by his predecessor Paulo Bento, who coached Taegeuk Warriors to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. South Korea, had an impressive World Cup campaign in Qatar, defeating Portugal 2-1 in their final Group H-match to progress to the knockout round. Although Bento’s men suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Brazil in the last-16 stage, they were the only Asian side reach the knockout rounds in the middle east. Meanwhile, the Taegeuk Warriors returned to action with a 2-2 draw against Colombia on March 24, before losing 2-1 to Uruguay four days later, despite the fact that Hwang In-beom got on the scoresheet. The result extended their winless run to three games, losing two times in the period. Therefore, Klinsman will be desperate to secure his first victory in the two friendlies against Peru and El Salvador this month.
Peru, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing 5-4 on penalties against Australia in June last year. But the South American’s ended 2022 on a positive note, recording three successive wins against El Salvador, Paraguay and Bolivia, scoring six goals and conceding just one in the period. However, La Blanquirroja were unable to carry that momentum into March international window, where they failed to win either of their two friendlies. After losing 2-0 to Germany in Mainz courtesy of Niklas Fullkrug’s brace, Juan Reynoso’s men played out a goalless draw against World Cup semi-finalists Morocco.
