Sheffield United will be bidding to make it four consecutive wins across all competitions when they host Wigan Athletic in an EFL Championship fixture at Bramall Lane on Friday. Both sides secured 1-0 wins in their previous outings last weekend, with the hosts edging past Norwich City, while Wigan got the better of Queens Park Rangers. The Blades are occupying the second spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 73 points from 38 games, six points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough and 11 adrift of leaders Burnley. The visitors, meanwhile, are languishing at the bottom of the table, with just 34 points to their name, five points shy of safety.

Last Saturday, Sheffield United secured all three points against Norwich courtesy of James McAtee’s lone goal on the hour-mark. The match at Carrow Road was a cagey affair as both sides registered only one shot on target each, while the Blades managed to find the back of the net from their lone attempt. It was the Paul Heckingbottom’s side’s 22nd league-win of the season. The victory definitely strengthened Sheffield United’s hold on the second automatic qualification spot and they are also set to play the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final fixture later this month at Wembley Stadium. Five of the Blades’ next six league-matches will be played at Bramall Lane, and they have a pretty good home-record in the league this term, having collected 33 points from a possible 54 in front of their own supporters.
Wigan, on the other hand, have an increasingly uphill task at their disposal to avoid relegation. The recent three-point penalty imposed on them for failing to pay wages on time has made the situations even worse for the Lactics. With seven games remaining Shaun Maloney’s side are six points away from safety and will need to put together an impressive run of form to have any chance of remaining in the second division for at least one more season. The Tics have recorded just eight league-wins this term and the latest of those wins came against Queens Park Rangers last Saturday, courtesy of Max Power’s sixth-minute penalty kick. Meanwhile, Wigan have done decently well on their travels, pocketing 19 points from as many league-games on the road this term.
