Sheffield United will continue their preparations for the 2023-24 Premier League season with a pre-season friendly against La Liga outfit Girona at Manchester City Academy Stadium on Wednesday. The Blades are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Rotherham United on Monday, while Gironistes played out a 2-2 draw against Andorra. The South Yorkshire club will be hoping to put their best foot forward on their first English top flight season after earning promotion by finishing second in the Championship last term. The White and Reds, meanwhile, claimed a mid-table finish in the 2022-23 Spanish top flight standings.

Sheffield United began their pre-season with a 2-0 win over Chesterfield mid-way through this month, before traveling to Portugal for a week long training camp, in which they played out a goalless draw against Primeira Liga side Estoril Praia. Paul Heckingbottom’s side returned to England and suffered a narrow defeat to Rotherham on Monday. Trailist’s lone goal inside the opening 11 minutes separated the two side at New York Stadium. The Blades have three friendlies left against the likes of Girona, Derby County and VFB Stuttgart before beginning their 2023-24 Premier League campaign away to Crystal Palace on August 12.
Girona, on the other hand, also had an impressive La Liga season last term having previously earned promotion from the Segunda Division via the playoffs in 2022. In their first season back in the Spanish top flight, the White and Reds finished tenth in the standings courtesy of collecting 49 points from 38 games, just four points adrift of the top seven. At one stage, Gironistes were alive in the race for a European qualification but recording three draws and two defeats from their final five games meant they had to settle for a mid-table finish. Nevertheless, by all means it was brilliant campaign for Michel Sanchez’s side. On their return to action for the pre-season last week, Blanquivermells defeated Olot 4-2, before playing out a 2-2 draw against Andorra last time out thanks to goals from Yangel Herrera and Christian Stuani. Now upping the intensity of their pre-season preparations further, Girona travel to Manchester to take on the Blades and Blackburn Rovers before meeting Serie A club Napoli and Lazio and kicking off their new La Liga campaign away to Real Sociedad in mid-August.
