AS Roma are in Portugal as part of their mid-season preparations in order to keep the squad match fit ahead of the resumption of competitive action after the World Cup. The Italian outfit are set to take on Portuguese club Casa Pia in a friendly fixture at Estadio Municipal de Albufeira on Monday night. The Serie A side are heading into the match on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Cadiz in a friendly on Saturday, while Casa Pia got the better of Trofense 1-0 in a Taca da Liga match last Sunday.

Roma are currently occupying seventh position in the Italian top flight standings, having 27 points from 15 games, three points adrift of the top-four. Their last competitive action was against Torino on November 13 which ended in a 1-1 draw courtesy of Nemanja Matic’s 91st-minute equaliser. After that, Jose Mourinho’s side have participated in three friendlies, losing one, while the other two ended in draws. Meanwhile, after the game against Casa Pia, La Lupa will play one more friendly against RKC Waalwijk on Thursday, before resuming their Serie A campaign at home against Bologna on January 4.
As for Casa Pia, this will be their final friendly match before the resumption of the Primeria Liga season with an away game against Portimonense. The Geese are currently occupying fifth position in the Portuguese top flight standings, having pocketed 23 points from 13 games, six adrift of second-placed Porto. The Geese’s last outing against Trofense ended in a 1-0 win courtesy of Carnejy Antoine’s 17th-minute strike. Meanwhile, Casa Pia ended the match with a man less as Saviour Godwin was sentoff, 20 minutes from time.

AS Roma midfielder Gini Wijnaldum, who was sidelined with a fractured trivia, has returned to the squad and is expected to get some time in Portugal. Meanwhile, the likes of Andrea Belotti and Benjamin Tahirovic are still nursing injuries and playmaker Paulo Dybala is away on World Cup duty. The 29-year-old is part of the Argentina squad that is set to play the final against France on Sunday. Goalkeeper Rui Patricio and midfielder Nicola Zalezski have cut short their vacation and returned to resume training ahead of the new year. As for Casa Pia, head coach Filipe Martins could make some changes to the side that started against Trofense. Bolgado, Fernandes and Varela might form the back-three.
