Jorginho

Jorge Luiz Frello Filho, popularly known as Jorginho, is an Italian defensive midfielder who also plays for Chelsea FC. Jorginho is a versatile midfielder with great vision and composure. He is also known for his accurate penalty kicks with a unique runup. In building set pieces and moving the ball forward through midfield, Jorginho is a real asset to have.

In Italy’s quest to Euro 2020 title, Jorginho’s performance was widely appreciated by people all over the world earning him a spot in the Team of the Tournament. Jorginho has also won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea and was nominated in the third place for the Ballon d’Or.  

Although Jorginho was born in Brazil, he shifted to Italy at a young age of 15. And there he started his football career with Verona football club. After playing for Sambonifacese on loan he was then called up by Napoli in January 2014. He spent four years in Napoli winning the Supercoppa Italia and Coppa Italia in 2014 and 2015. Jorginho was then signed by Chelsea FC in 2018 where he is a crucial first team starter. He won his first Champions League trophy for Chelsea in 2021 defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1-0. In the last four years Chelsea have changed 3 managers but Jorginho’s performance has always stood out in every season.

Verona: He made his debut for Verona on 4^th September 2011 as a substitute against Sassuolo. 

Italy: Jorginho was given the option to either play for Brazil or Italy due to his dual citizenship. He chose Italy and played his first game on 24^th March 2014 in a match against Spain. 

Notable Statistics

In 2014, Jorginho scored an important goal to defeat Roma and reach the Coppa Italia Final. Jorginho was part of the squad that defeated Fiorentina to win the title for Napoli. 

Jorginho joined Chelsea for a transfer fee of 50million euros with 7million euros add ons on a five-year contract. Jorginho’s penalty kicks have impacted a lot of Chelsea games in a positive way. In a game against Villareal in UEFA Super Cup 2021, Jorginho was brought on as a substitute only to score a penalty and win the game 6-5 in the shoot outs. 

In 2021, Jorginho also won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award and bagged third place in the Ballon d’Or race behind runner up Robert Lewandowski and winner Lionel Messi. 

In the Euro Cup 2020, Jorginho made the most recoveries (46), most interceptions (25) and covered the most distance (86.6km) than any other player. He also completed second most passes in the league just after Aymeric Laporte of Manchester City from Spain.
