Manchester United have announced the signing of defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. As per the reports coming in, the deal is worth 50 million euros. The Frenchman had been with the Spanish giants for the last 10 seasons and is considered as one of the best centre-backs of the present generation in world football. Meanwhile, he will complete his move to the English Premier League club after the medical test in a couple of days.

Varane was a pivotal part of Real Madrid’s success alongside Sergio Ramos in the central defence. He has won 18 titles with the Los Blancos, which includes- four Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups.

“Real Madrid would like to express their gratitude to Raphael Varane and his family and wish him the best of luck in this new stage of his career,” a Real Madrid statement said.

“Our club thanks the player for his professionalism and exemplary conduct throughout his ten seasons representing our colours.”

New-look Real Madrid defence

Meanwhile, with the departure of veteran defender Ramos to Paris Saint-Germain this summer and now Varane also leaving, we will see a new-look Real Madrid defence the coming season. The likes of Eder Militao, Nacho and new signing Davis Alaba are going to be the top three central defenders.

Varane’s contract with the 13 time UEFA Champions League winners was till 2022 and since he didn’t sign a contract extension and wanted to embark a new challenge, it paved the way for his move to England.

The player didn’t train with Real Madrid on Tuesday after returning from holiday following his international duty with France in the Euro 2020. He played all four matches for France in the European Championship this summer where they were eliminated by Switzerland in the last-16 stage.

His move to United was in the works for several weeks as the clubs were negotiating a fair price for the world-class defender. Meanwhile, Varane is likely to partner captain Harry Maguire in the central defence. However he will have to fight with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly for a place in the playing eleven consistently.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished the last Premier League season 12 points behind champions Manchester City and will be hoping to close that gap and even challenge for the title next season.
