The Magpies are heading into the match on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Nuneaton Borough on Tuesday, thanks to efforts from Maucaulay Langstaff, Jim O'Brien and Cedyn Scott.
Stoke City will play their first pre-season friendly ahead of the 2023-24 EFL championship season on Saturday, when they travel to Meadow Lane to take on Notts County. The Potters finished 16th in the English second tier standings last season, and are preparing for their sixth straight season in the Championship, while the hosts earned promotion to the League Two through the Nations League playoffs after earning a second-place finish in the fifth tier points table at the end of last term. Meanwhile, the Magpies are heading into the match on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Nuneaton Borough on Tuesday.
Notts County had an eye-catching 2022-23 Nations League campaign, collecting 107 points from 46 games, just four adrift of champions Wrexham, and thereby had to settle for a a place in the playoffs. With the playoff semi-final contested over a single leg, Magpies fought back from two goals down to earn a dramatic 3-2 victory over Boreham Wood to book their place at Wembley. And then, Luke Williams’ side met Chesterfield in the playoff final and again relied to late goals to force the game into extra time and thereby penalties, where they prevailed 4-2 to seal their return to the the Football League after four years in the fifth tier. Meanwhile, the Magpies have already kicked off their pre-season preparations, putting three goals past Nuneaton Borough without reply on Tuesday, thanks to efforts from Maucaulay Langstaff, Jim O’Brien and Cedyn Scott. They will be looking to continue their preparations for the League Two return with a positive result on home turf against the Potters.
Stoke City, on the other hand, are getting ready for the first full season under the management of Alex Neil, who took charge of the Potters in August, 2022 following the departure of Michael O’Neil at the start of last season. Stoke managed to accumulate 46 points from 40 games under the stewardship of the Scottish tactician, which helped them finish 16th in the second tier standings. The Potters will be keen to improve and secure a higher finish this time around, and they will hope to kickoff pre-season in style in Nottingham before taking on Levante, Derby County, Burton Albion and Everton in the coming weeks.
