West Ham United are only two games away from reaching a European final. They take on Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the Europa Conference League semi-finals in their own home. The remaining set of games could end up being a great opportunity for both sides to secure their hands on an important European trophy. West Ham have done incredibly well to reach this stage of the competition. Despite their indifferent form in the Premier League, the London outfit has done remarkably well in this tournament.

David Moyes is eager to take West Ham United into the final, something that will be a huge boost for both the club and the manager. In his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa Conference League semi-final first leg, Moyes was asked whether booking a place in the final of this competition would be his crowning career achievement.

“I think it would be. A European final? It could be yeah.” Moyes was quoted as saying by skysports.com. “I was fortunate to get to a Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United, lost on penalty kicks in the quarter-finals of the Europa League with Everton. Last season, I was in a semi-final with West Ham. This year we’re in a semi-final again. So I want to try and take it one step further.”

David Moyes denies favourites tag

Heading into the semi-finals, a lot of people are labelling West Ham United as the favourites to reach the final. Moyes disagrees with those claims and states that he has nothing but respect for Alkmaar. When asked if West Ham are favourites to go through, Moyes replied, “I wouldn’t say so. I have a lot of respect for AZ and the way they play and what they’ve got. They’re doing an amazing season. Any Dutch team you play are good, they are good football teams and are well-coached. It will be hard work for us.”

Moyes, who was a former Manchester United manager once, also referred to the words of another former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. “Sir Alex Ferguson always used to talk about this [being] the time of the year where you had to be at your best. Having your best form at this time of the season is always a good thing. I do believe we are playing our best stuff right now and I think we can get much better. I hope we can do that in the coming games,” he added.

Moyes then shifted his focus to Roma manager Jose Mourinho and spoke about how much it meant for him to win this competition last year. “I refer back to probably the serial winner in Jose Mourinho. Winning this trophy was so special for him and his football club. If ever I needed someone to show how hard it is, it would be Jose. He treated it as if it was so important, there’s no way we’re treating it any less than that,” he elaborated.
