Manchester United have a difficult test awaiting them in the round-of-16 second leg tie against Real Betis in the Europa League. Erik ten Hag’s side are in driver’s seat after winning the first leg 4-1 at Old Trafford last week. However, United centre-back Lisandro Martinez is not taking anything for granted. The Argentinian defender wants the club to be ready for the difficult task at hand in the second leg. Martinez, who has become a crowd favourite in no time, has also opened up about the club’s expectations of having to win every game and trophy that they participate in.

Manager ten Hag recently spoke about how much he would like to work with Lisandro Martinez for many years at Old Trafford. The pair had a good relationship at Ajax and have taken that partnership into Manchester as well. Asked about the manager’s comments, Martinez told the club media at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, “I feel at home since the first day here, when I [first] put my foot in Carrington I remember it was an amazing feeling.”

“So I’m happy to be with him, to work with him. I know his mentality, he knows my mentality as well. So, in a quick time we get the first trophy so we have to work for everything, we have to believe. This club demands to win every game, every title, so we are happy to take this responsibility.”

It is very nice to play in Europe: Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez then spoke about his love for playing in European competitions. “Well, a lot. I think it is very nice to play in Europe. We have to enjoy [it]. I think tomorrow it’s going to be a really beautiful game, here in Spain against [Real] Betis with their people, for sure with our fans as well. So, yeah, it’s going to be a nice game,” he added.

The Argentine centre-back then diverted his attention to the second leg against Real Betis. Despite Manchester United enjoying a healthy cushion, Martinez is not taking anything for granted. “Tomorrow, [in] the game we start 0-0. We have to be ready. We need full focus tomorrow because it’s going to be a hard game for us. So if you are not focused you can lose this game. For sure the first leg was a great result for us, but it doesn’t say anything. In football everything can happen, so we have to be ready,” he explained.

After the Thursday night fixture against Real Betis, Manchester United take on Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday. When the two games are completed, several players depart for national team duties. Lisandro Martinez spoke about this desire to leave for the international break on a positive note. “For sure it’s very important, but we have to finish well and after [I go away with the] national team also we have many important games. That’s why we have to think game by game. We have to be ready for every game,” he added.
