Basel will host Trabzonspor in the second leg of their Europa Conference League playoff tie at St Jakob-Park on Thursday night. The reverse fixture at Medical Park Stadium ended 1-0 in favour of the Turkish club, thanks to substitute Jens Stryger Larsen’s goal ten minutes into the second half. It was a dominant performance from Abdullah Avci’s side as they created 20 chances, with 10 of those attempts on target, compared to just 2 shots on goal by Basel. The Swiss outfit will consider themselves lucky to return home with just a one-goal deficit from Turkey.

Basel are struggling in the Swiss top flight, having recorded just six wins from their 21 outings to be sitting at the sixth position in the 10-team table. Last time out, Heiko Vogel’s side shared the spoils against Servette in the league, courtesy of second half goals from Zeki Amdouni and Andi Zeqiri. Meanwhile Rotblau finished the match with 10-men as midfielder Fabian Frei was shown a straight red card by referee Sandro Scharer seven minutes into the injury time. Last season, Basel got eliminated in the last-16 stage of Eurpe’s secondary competition after losing 4-2 on aggregate against Ligue 1 side Marseille.
Trabzonspor, on the other hand, are aiming to qualify for the last-16 of the competition for the first time in the club’s 55-year history. The Turkish champions could have secured a bigger victory in Turkey last week, but Basel goalkeeper Marwin Hitz made a number of stunning saves to keep the tie alive. But the Black Sea Storm are unlikely to defend their league-title, having pocketed just 38 points from 22 games, to be sitting at the sixth position, 16 adrift of leaders Galatasaray. Meanwhile Trabzonspor will return to league action on March 4 against Umraniyespor, after the postponement of Turkish football following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this month.
Goalkeeper Hitz, who was Basel’s hero in Turkey, will continue in goal, with Lang, Kasim, Pelmard and Calafiori forming the four-man defence in front of the 35-year-old gloveman. Kaly Sene might lead the line, with Kade operating behind him in a free role. As for Trabzonspor, last game’s goal-scorer Larsen might replace Maxi Gomez up front. Trezeguet could operate behind the striker, with Anastasios Bakasetas and Abdulkadir Omur occupying the flanks.
Basel probable line-up: Hitz, Lang, Kasim, Pelmard, Calafiori, Frei, Xhaka, Burger, Kade, Novoa, Sene
Trabzonspor Probable line-up: Cakir, Peres, Hugo, Denswil, Almali, Haspolat, Siopis, Omur, Bakasetas, Trezeguet, Larsen
