The Napoli of today, managed by the charismatic, eccentric and well-respected Luciano Spalletti, are currently occupying top spot in the Serie A standings and they are not just leading the Italian top flight, they are dominating it. As I write, Partenopei have collected 79 points from 32 games, and need just one more win to secure the Scudetto for the first time in more than three decades. Partenopei have scored an astonishing 68 league-goals, while conceding only 22. Spalletti’s side are undoubtedly one of the most exciting club in Europe this term. Lets have a look at some of their all-time top goal-scorers.

1) Dries Mertens

Dries Mertens has scored 148 goals for Napoli in 398 appearances across all competitions. The Belgian forward joined the Blues in 2013 from PSV Eindhoven and went to serve them for the next nine years before being sold to Turkish outfit Galatasary in August 2022. Mertens won two Coppa Italia titles and one Italian Super Cup crown with Partenopei. His best league campaign for the club came in 2016/17 when the attacker netted an astonishing 38 goals and provided nine assists in 35 appearances.

2) Lorenzo Insigne

Lorezno Insigne, who served his local team for more than 15 years has scored an impressive 122 goals in 434 appearances. The attacking midfielder joined the Blues in 2007 as a 15 year-old and went on to represnt them in various age group teams before making is senior team debut in January 2010, at the age of just 18 years. Apart from his goal-scoring prowess, the playmaker has also recorded 95 assists for Napoli across all competitions. He would often operate behind the striker, find pockets of space in and around the penalty box and has a lethal right foot, capable for cutting inside from the left channel and finding the top corner.

3) Marek Hamsik

The Slovakia attacker served the Italian outfit for almost 12 years, scoring an impressive 121 goals in 520 appearances. The attacking midfielder surpassed Diego Maradona’s astonishing 115 goal tally in 2017 but since then the Slovak veteran slowed down and he left the city of Naples in 2019 to join Chinese club Di Yifang. After spending two years in Asia, the playmaker joined Swedish outfit IFK Goteberg in 2021 and then the same year he signed for Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor.

4) Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona is undoubtedly the most illustrious player to have played for the Naples club. The Argentina legend joined Napoli in in a then world record fee of 6.9 million Euros in 1984. It was during his six years in Naples that the world witnessed Maradona at his bewitching best. As a captain, he inspired Napoli to their first ever Scudetto in 1987. The 1986 World Cup winner finished the 1987/88 Serie A season as Capocannoniere with 15 goals as the little donkeys finished second behind AC Milan. Meanwhile, Maradona’s best performance for the Blues was in the 1989-90 season when he recorded 16 goals and 10 assists in 28 Serie A games. Apart from domestic success, he also led them to their first and only continental success in history, lifting the UEFA Cup in 1989.

5) Attila Sallustro

Attila Sallustro is one of those unfortunate players who never represented the Italian national team in spite of his incredible goal-scoring prowess. The Paraguayan born footballer moved to Italy as a youngster and joined Napoli when they were first known as Internaples and stayed with the club for the majority of his career. At Napoli he was nicknamed “II Vetro” and Sallustro chose not to take any financial pay from the club though he was rewarded with a luxury motor car. In his 12 years at the club, Sallustro scored 108 goals in 269 appearances.
