After failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1978, Mexico will be desperate to bounce back by lifting the Gold Cup for a 12th time in the nations history. El Tri got eliminated in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar courtesy of finishing third in Group C behind champions Argentina and Poland. The World Cup disappointment led to the departure of manager Gerardo Martino and Argentine tactician Diego Cocca came in to take charge of the team. The 51-year-old started of pretty well by helping Mexico go through to the last four stage of the CONCACAF Nations League but the Gold Cup would be his litmus test.
Guatemala, on the other hand, are heading into the match on the back of a four-game unbeaten streak that includes three wins. Last time out, the Chapines put four goals past French Guiana thanks to second half efforts from Rubio Rubin, Marlon Sequen, Nicolas Samayoa and Jorge Aparicio, and finished on top of Group D League B. Meanwhile, the most recent head-to-head fixture against Mexico in April ended goalless. The Blue and White will fancy their chances of progressing to the knockout stages of the Gold Cup thus summer, having been drawn alongside Canada and Cuba in Group D. While Canada will be the favourites to secure top spot, Guatemala will be expected to edge out Cuba for the second spot.
