United ended their two-game losing run in dramatic fashion at the weekend. The Red Devils needed a late Bruno Fernandes goal to secure the three points in a 1-0 Premier League victory over Fulham. While the performance was not eye catching, the result was a much-needed one for the visitors. Considering the club’s recent poor run, this match was all about the result and the United players just about did the job.

One player who stood out during the win was defender and former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire. The English international has continued his resurgence this season and produced another top performance against Fulham. Despite suffering a clash of heads with Fulham’s forward Rodrigo Muniz, Maguire still bravely continued and stayed on top of his game. “He was playing a massive, massive game. A very good performance. He showed leadership and in and out of possession he was very good, so I’m very pleased with that performance from Harry,” manager Erik ten Hag, quoted by the club’s website, said after the match.

Erik ten Hag: I was pleased with the way we pressed

Even though ten Hag was happy with the team’s buildup, he felt the team should do more in the final third. “I think from the back we played decent, we played solid but as I say I think in the final third we have to improve our quality. Every game we have to win. I think it was a solid performance, so I am pleased with it. I am pleased especially with the spirit of the team. I was pleased with the way we pressed. Fulham, I think they play very decent football from the back but we never allowed them to play from the back. We were very good in the pressing and winning second balls. Also the ball progression, it’s clear that when we came in the box we have to create more but I think in terms of composure on the ball it was a step up,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Maguire spoke after the game and expressed his happiness to see out the game despite the earlier head clash. “Obviously I got a knock really early in the game but the doc did all the tests, I knew where I was, was answering all the questions and I completed them thankfully. If the doc says I’m okay to carry on, I’m always going to carry on. So, no, it felt good to be able to get through the game, help the lads to a clean sheet and more importantly three points,” he told MUTV.

Harry Maguire on next two games

Man United’s next two games will be against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and Luton Town in the Premier League. Speaking about the importance of it, Maguire said, “[They are] another two big games, where we have to go and try to get maximum points. In the Champions League at Copenhagen, we know that is going to be tough, they don’t get beat at home very often.”

He added: “That’s going to be tough, then it’s back to Old Trafford to put things right because our home form has been nowhere near good enough. So we have two big games before the international break, but for now, we will rest up, recover and enjoy this result and performance. But we know we have a lot of improvement to do to get to where we want to be in the Premier League and in the Champions League group too.”
