Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville did not mince his words when describing the club’s current situation. The Red Devils were just a shadow of themselves after suffering another demoralising defeat – this time in the Carabao Cup. Newcastle United defeated the Red Devils 3-0 at home, something not many saw it coming. This was on the back of suffering a similar defeat against Manchester City in the Premier League at the weekend.

The Wednesday night encounter at Old Trafford was a repeat of last season’s Carabao Cup final. Back then Manchester United had beaten Newcastle United 2-0 to lift the trophy. However, on Wednesday, the Red Devils were nowhere near that title-winning level and produced a flat performance. Both sides changed their squads significantly but the visitors looked a lot more disciplined in their play, while the home side seemed clueless.

What did Gary Neville say?

Former Man United skipper Gary Neville was the latest in a long line of people to react to that disappointing performance. Neville wrote on ‘X,’ explaining the contrast difference in the structure between Manchester United and the two teams they had faced in recent games. “On my way up to the gantry last night I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle,” he wrote.

The former full-back added: “He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing. Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly. In the last two matches Manchester United have played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley. It was painful to see.”

Normally, Manchester United’s home ground Old Trafford is referred to as the Theatre of Dreams. However, Neville labelled it as the “Theatre of Nothing,” before stating that everyone knows “how it ends.” “Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch the players in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough,” he further wrote.
