Manchester United were at their scintillating best against Chelsea, as they recorded a 2-1 win in the Premier League on Wednesday night. This was the match of the mid-week and for understandable reasons too. Even though both clubs are not playing at their best, there was a lot of excitement around this clash due to the history between the two sides. And the contest on the Wednesday did not let the supporters down, as there were numerous action-packed moments in the match.

The Red Devils started the game strongly and even had a penalty, which was missed by Bruno Fernandes. Despite the missed opportunity, Manchester United created multiple chances and took one of them through Scott McTominay. However, Cole Palmer equalised for Chelsea in the closing stages of the first half. McTominay though stepped in to score a second goal midway through the second period.

After the Premier League contest, manager Erik ten Hag gave an insight into McTominay’s role on the pitch. He started by praising Sofyan Amrabat and McTominay’s performance in the middle of the park. “I think they played very strong, very dynamic, very proactive, in and out of possession. They won a lot of duels together,” ten Hag told the official broadcasters and MUTV after the match.

What is Scott McTominay’s role on the pitch?

He added: “Scott came in the right positions and scored two great goals. We want him to play a little bit higher on the pitch. We want to reach him there. He has to make his runs in behind as he is strong on that. He has a good smell to come in the right moment in front of the goal. He is a very good finisher. I think Sofyan is settling in. He is progressing and you see he is getting more comfortable. Already last week, against Galatasaray, he was playing well. Tonight, he played well also.”

Manchester United suffered a bad defeat away to Newcastle United at the weekend. Even though the final scoreline read only 1-0, the overall outcome could have been totally different. A lot of people were left disappointed with Man United’s poor showing on the day. Hence, to follow it up and register a well-earned result against Chelsea would have been pleasing for the fan base. When asked whether the players responded from the setback, ten Hag said, “I don’t see that in facts of a response.”

He added: “We play now four games after the break, so we had one disappointing result and we had two before this night, very good performances. Today, again, a very good performance and, of course, with the result. At the end of day, it’s about the result and I’m very pleased with it. I think they played very good. They also played, against Galatasaray, very good. Against Everton – very good. So you see the progress in this team and we go in the right direction.”
