Manchester United have decided to part company with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a recent poor run, which saw the club slump to seventh place in the Premier League table. Few would have been surprised by the decision to part ways with Ole, given the team’s on-field struggles were obvious to all. Under the Norwegian, who signed a new three-year deal in July, saw his side suffer five defeats in their last seven league matches. That poor run saw the team slip from potential title contenders to being placed outside the Champions League places, as United are currently 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. Heavy home defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks did not help his cause, while a 4-1 hammering away to Watford on Saturday proved to be the final straw.

Club statement

A club statement read: “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager. Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.”

“Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.”

Former United midfielder player Michael Carrick has been placed in temporary charge, with the Red Devils looking to make an interim appointment until the end of the season. The statement concluded: “Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.”

Nowhere near good enough: Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s final match as Manchester United manager proved to be the shock 4-1 Premier League defeat to Watford. The manager was understandably not happy with the team’s display, especially in the first half. “We started too late. We started at half-time. The second half was very good. In the first half we never turned up,” Ole had told the club media.

“They outfought us, we allowed them to get the ball in the box, we allowed them space. They won most of the challenges. And then you get to 40 minutes 1-0 down and you’re probably lucky to be 1-0 down, David made two fantastic saves from penalties and there were some blocks. But then that second goal came in. From half-time, the response was very good. I thought we played really well for half an hour until we ran out of legs. But it was nowhere near good enough of course. I’m not going to say anything but that.”

Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek came on as substitutes and made a decent impact on the pitch. The Dutchman – in particular – got a goal to reduce the deficit at the start of the second half, which eventually proved to be nothing but a consolation for 10-man United. “Both of them, Anto [Martial] and Donny [van de Beek] played really well,” he added.

“That’s the irony of it. In the second half, we played some fantastic stuff, created four or five big chances, Ben [Foster] had a couple of decent saves, we had a few more. But then of course it’s hard in the last 15 minutes playing with 10 men but I still thought we gave it a go second half and just couldn’t get the second goal that might have got us a point.”
