Manchester United have made a mixed start to the new Premier League season. The Red Devils have won two and lost two so far in the league. Both defeats came away from home to North London outfits – Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. Considering how poor United’s away form was last campaign, it is understandable to see some section of supporters being concerned with the start they have made this season.

It has also inevitably invited criticisms from some pundits and former players. Keeping the away form aside, last season was a promising one in many regards. Manchester United ended their trophy drought by getting their hands on the EFL Cup trophy and also reached the FA Cup final before losing to local rivals Manchester City. Besides, Erik ten Hag’s side also finished third in the Premier League, something not many saw it coming at the start of the campaign.

However, it will be difficult to main that level this time around due to the intense competition for places. Besides, two United wingers, Antony and Jadon Sancho, could be out of action for a while due to off-the-field issues. It could present an opportunity for young winger Facundo Pellistri to get regular game time. The Uruguay international would hope to make the most of this chance to get regular playing minutes after taking part in a personal training camp in Mexico during the pre-season.

Facundo Pellistri on Mexico training camp

Detailing the reason behind it, Pellistri told United Review, the official matchday programme, “Nowadays, football is, each time, difficult. You can’t have holidays so you have to keep training during any holidays. So that’s why everyone keeps pushing because now the seasons are, every time, harder. And if we want to win everything, we have to train that way. It’s how it is now. And, of course, we do what we like. We like to play. We want to play lots of games and, if you don’t train, you can’t do that.”

Pellistri, who once again represented Uruguay in the recent international break, said how he had to change his practice timings due to the heat in Mexico. “Very hot! I had to train quite late because the first day, I tried to train as normal, more or less, three o’clock but it was impossible because of the sun. So I started to train later, like nine o’clock in the night,” he explained.

The youngster also explained how it is important for wingers in modern game to not only focus on attack but also track back to help the team’s defence. “It’s very important nowadays. Nowadays, the wingers, they do not have only to attack but they also have to defend. So, before, you’d think, okay, I’m a winger. I just attack but, nowadays, you have to defend the same way that you attack. So that’s why I had to train in Mexico because the players need to do all those things in the modern football. So, yes, that’s also why we have to defend,” he added.
