Luton Town vs Manchester United: Did Rasmus Hojlund intentionally divert Alejandro Garnacho’s shot into the net?

The second strike, however, was a freakish one. Alejandro Garnacho struck a volley, which was quickly diverted into the net by Rasmus Holjund.

Manchester United continued their recent good run of form by seeing off Luton Town 2-1 in the Premier League. The Red Devils raced to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening few minutes of the game, something not many saw it coming. Both goals were scored by promising young striker Rasmus Hojlund. The first one was a great finish, as he latched on to a mistake by a Luton player and raced past goalkeeper to slot it into an empty net.

Rasmus Hojlund on his second goal

The second strike, however, was a freakish one. Alejandro Garnacho struck a volley, which was quickly diverted into the net by Rasmus Holjund. Speaking about it, Hojlund told Sky Sports, “Yeah, [I] 100 per cent [meant it]. I think you can see I took my body there and just flick it in. I was surprised that was such a good goal, to be fair, but yeah, I’ve actually tried to train to, not finish like this, but, like, shoulders and just, you know, when you do kick-ups and stuff and you just toggle it a bit with the ball. Also at the moment, I have a lot of confidence, so yeah, it goes in.”

Reflecting on his opening goal against Luton Town, which arrived after just 37 seconds, Holjund said, “I thought that this [attack] could be something and I already knew that I was going to go past him [Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski] then. I have a lot of speed, so just drag it to my left foot and then go past him and yeah, put it in the back of the net. I was a little bit unsure of the touch because I thought that it was maybe going to go a little bit too short, but, in the end, it was a good goal.”

He added: “[We had] a good beginning, two good and fast goals and then we drop off a little bit, we get unfocused and they get one back. We know with this crowd and this pitch and this atmosphere, 2-1 is always a dangerous result and then we go to the break. I think actually we created a lot of chances in the second half, we just need to score. I have one as well and yeah, a little bit annoyed by that.”

‘I just want to keep playing with them’

United seem to have overcome early-season struggles by going on a good run lately. It is a big plus that his teammates up front have hit the form at the right time when the Danish striker is also on a purple patch. “I play for probably one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it’s quality players I train and play with every day, especially the guys I have around me. I’m very happy for them. I just want to keep playing with them and get even better. Hopefully they can also get better, and we can be and we can grow together,” he explained.

He further spoke about the importance of the win at Kenilworth Road, as well as their target to clinch a trophy. “This was massive today, closing an even closer gap to Spurs who lost some points as well. We need to keep pushing. It’s our target to get the Champions League football and go as far as we can in the FA Cup as well. We need to remember that it’s very important for us to win trophies, so we will do everything possible to go and win everything,” he stated.
