Liverpool will be keen to bounce back from the weekend disappointment when they face Union SG in a Europa League contest. The Reds had lost to Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. The defeat had arrived in a controversial circumstance after a Luis Diaz goal was wrongly disallowed for offside. Replays later revealed that Diaz was indeed onside and the officials had gotten the decision wrong, creating plenty of uproar among pundits, former players and supporters.

However, Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold wants to put the defeat behind him and focus on the upcoming Europa League group stage contest against Union SG. Asked about the feeling in the squad after the Tottenham Hotspur defeat, Trent, quoted by the club’s website, said in the pre-match press conference, “Yes, we’ve spoken about things but our focus is on the game tomorrow now. There is nothing we can do as players about what has gone on. It’s passed. We now focus on a different competition and a big three points for what we want to achieve.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold on VAR

The English international was asked whether there will be ‘severe trust issues’ with VAR going forward. He replied, “I wouldn’t say trust issues. I think decisions are decisions, sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against you. What happened on the weekend for us as players and as a team is very disappointing and frustrating. But, like I say, it’s passed us.”

He added: “There is nothing we can do as players now; the game has gone. We have just got to move forward and put it past us. VAR is a system that is in place, and it is something we can’t control as players. We’ve got to put our trust in the referees and the officials that use it and hope that they get the decisions right, and at times they don’t and at times they do. We’ve just got to hope that they get the decisions right as much as possible.”

The defeat, however, cannot take anything away from the amazing start Liverpool have made to the season in all competitions. Many supporters and pundits believe the club could reach great heights this season. When asked whether the team has the belief and spirit that they can create something special in this campaign, he responded, “Yes, 100 per cent. As players, as a team, we’re not shy for what our ambitions are and what we want to do. We want to win trophies and we want to win the biggest trophies out there. We feel we’ve laid a good foundation.”

He added: “We’re in a good position in the league table and still in the cup competitions, obviously got our first three points in this competition too, so we’re in a good position. It’s still early doors, we will be able to judge where we are. I think it’s always important to kind of analyse where you are around [the] Christmas stage because you really get a feel for what you can achieve. If we’re still in a position like this come Christmas, we’ve laid a perfect foundation to go and push on for the second half of the season. We are a team with high ambitions, and we demand that from ourselves. It’s a good spirit and a good feeling around the place.”
