Liverpool had a weekend to forget in the Premier League after losing to Tottenham Hotspur in controversial circumstances. The Reds lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to a Joel Matip injury-time own goal. The main talking point though was Luis Diaz’s goal being ruled out for offside. However, replays later showed that the officials got the decision wrong and Diaz was indeed onside.

Even though most of the attention went away with the wrong offside call, there was also an injury concern to deal with for Jurgen Klopp. Cody Gakpo, who scored Liverpool’s equaliser against Tottenham, suffered a knock following a challenge by Destiny Udogie. After the match, Klopp gave an update about Gakpo’s fitness after he was withdrawn at half time owing to the injury. “The biggest problem of the game, to be honest… before Cody Gakpo scored, we got a free-kick and he got injured and he is now with a brace limping down the corridor,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website after the match.

He added: “That’s my biggest problem, to be honest, in this moment. We lost two [to red cards] and maybe a third player – really bad, really bad. So, yes, that’s something we have to deal with obviously.” When asked if the injury was a “bad one,” Klopp replied, “Possibly, I don’t know. He wore a brace. He scored a goal but afterwards, but after that shot he felt it even more. It was from the foul before.”

Jurgen Klopp on disallowed goal

However, his post-match interviews were mainly focused on the disallowed goal. “I don’t think there is anything to say about the offside goal, I knew it at half-time. In the first moment I saw [it], it’s clearly not offside but then it’s offside, so I try to think they have a better view and at half-time we knew. With normal pictures, [it’s] easy to see now. But [I’m] pretty sure whoever did that, made that decision, didn’t do it on purpose. It didn’t take extremely long to come to the conclusion. It’s a bit strange but somebody else has to clarify that. I have nothing else to say about it,” he explained.

Klopp was asked whether he received any kind of explanation from the referee after the game. “How can the ref explain the situation? The linesman thought obviously it’s worth watching [and] looking again and that’s why he raised the flag. In the good old times, a linesman should have seen that as well, that this is not offside, because we had these situations quite frequently and when you see it back it’s pretty clear… but, again, nobody did it on purpose, whatever I say here just creates headlines but doesn’t help the situation at all. I’m not in the mood,” he stated.
