Latvia will be hoping to start their 2022-23 UEFA Nations League campaign on a positive note when they host Andorra on Friday. In the match at the Daugava Stadium, Latvia will have a slight edge over their opponents, taking into account their recent run of form and FIFA rankings. Hence, Latvia would be keen to start the tournament on the front foot and eventually secure the promotion from League D. Andorra’s recent international form has been quite poor but surprisingly Latvia’s run of results has been decent, giving them the favourites tag for Friday’s encounter.

In the 2020-21 Nations League, Latvia began its campaign against Andorra but was only able to manage a goalless draw. In the end, they were not able to move on to League C after finishing five points behind the Faroe Islands. They would definitely need to improve their performance from that campaign to have a shot at promotion this year. In the current rankings, Latvia are placed at 135, compared to Andorra’s 153. Besides, their recent run of form has been quite good.

Latvia are unbeaten in their last four matches, winning two and drawing two. This recent run of positive results will give them a boost ahead of Friday’s clash. On the other hand, Andorra have a lot to improve. In all of 2021, they won only twice and both were against lowly-ranked San Marino during the 2022 World Cup qualification. This year they won two games and both were against Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Grenada. On Friday, Latvia will be the favourites but Andorra can take some comfort from their recent friendly victories.

Probable line-ups

Latvia will miss the services of senior defender Vitalijs Maksimenko and goalkeeper Roberta Ozola. Vladislavs Gutkovskis and Davis Ikaunieks could lead the line for the home side, while Roberts Uldrikis could also be in line to start the match. On the other hand, Andorra do not seem to have many injury concerns to the team that is most likely going to be led by thirty-nine-year-old Marc Pujol. Goalkeeper Josep Gomes could start for them which will be his 80th cap for them.

Latvia possible line-up: Steinbors, Savalnieks, Cernomordijs, Dubra, Jurkovskis, Emsis, Kamess, Zjuzins, Ciganiks, Gutkovskis, Ikaunieks

Andorra possible line-up: Gomes, Alavedra, Garcia, Llovera, Cervos, Rubio, Vales, Rebes, Pujol, Alaez, Martinez
