Kerala Blasters are reportedly set to sign Sporting Gijon striker Alvaro Vazquez. As per multiple reports, the 30-year-old would sign a one-year deal making him one of the most exciting players at the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL). He was born in Barcelona, Catalonia and then signed for RCD Espanyol’s youth system in 2005 at the age of 14. Vazquez made his senior team debut for Espanyol against Real Madrid in September 2010. From the Barcelona-based club, he then moved to Getafe, playing five years in the La Liga.

In 2013, when Getafe were relegated he was loaned out to England, where he played for Swansea City. After a disappointing season in the Premier League, which saw him making just 12 Premier League appearances for the Swans, he returned to Getafe for two seasons before joining boyhood club Espanyol.

However, while at Espanyol, Vazquez was loaned to two Segunda Division sides Gimnastic and Zaragoza. He netted 10 times for Zaragoza before Sporting Gijon signed the forward for free. But the striker failed to get going at Gijon and was loaned out to Sabadell earlier this year. Now, the Spaniard is not in Gijon’s plans this year, and therefore finds himself on his way to India.

Vazquez could be the biggest signing by Kerala Blasters for the upcoming season. The striker has experience of playing in the La Liga and Premier League. Therefore, no doubt he would be one of the stars to watch out for in the upcoming ISL.

Blasters have already brought in Jorge Pereyra Diaz, midfielder Adrian Luna and defender Enes Sipovic. Vazquez and Diaz could form a potent attacking partnership. Blasters’ have brought in new boss Ivan Vukomanovic to end their trophy drought and are fairly busy in the transfer market.

The Kochi-based team finished 10th in the 11-team ISL last season and will be hoping for a better outing this time around.

Not the best pre-season friendly results for Blasters

Meanwhile, the Yellow army didn’t have the best of starts under the Serbian coach as they lost their first pre-season friendly 1-0 to Kerala United FC. But the second friendly on August 27 against the same side was a goal fest that saw both teams scoring three goals each.

Sreekuttan VS opened the scoring for the Blasters before Bujair equalized for United. However, the Blasters restored the lead as Subha Ghosh capitalised on a goalkeeping error. But then Shafnad levelled the score once again for KUFC before Adarsh made the score 3-2 for Bino George’s side.

In the end, Ayush Adhikari found the back of the net for Kerala Blasters, which, in turn meant that United had to settle for a draw. Next up, Vukomanovic’s side will take on Jammu and Kashmir Bank FC on September 3 before taking part in their maiden Durand Cup campaign.
