City just completed a dream campaign that saw them win a historic treble. Pep Guardiola’s side started the season as one of the favourites in almost every competition they participated. And they lived up to that level, by winning three of the four tournaments which they were a part of. First was the Premier League title. It was not an easy challenge since they had to chase Arsenal for most parts of the season.
In the end though Manchester City took advantage of Arsenal slipping up to clinch the Premier League crown. They followed it up by beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final. Then came the big one. Man City’s long wait for Champions League glory finally ended with them edging past Inter Milan 1-0 in the final.
The triumph sparked wild celebrations among Manchester City players and supporters. One player who got plenty of unnecessary attention for his partying was Jack Grealish. Many videos and pictures of him partying hard went viral. It invited criticism from some section of pundits and supporters.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is the latest player to speak about Grealish’s celebrations, as he gave him a word of caution about “partying hard.” In talkSPORT, he was asked if Grealish’s approach to being a top-level footballer is “refreshing.” Murphy replied, “No, I don’t think that is the word I would use.”
“He is himself, he’s his own person; he doesn’t play by the rulebook and that is admirable. I think he has got to be a little bit careful. I love him. This season, he’s obviously done the right things away from the pitch to perform how he has done on it. He has made an improvement.”
He also went to praise Grealish for how much he has improved this season in a Man City jersey. “People talk about getting to know the Pep [Guardiola] way, which is fair enough tactically – it takes a bit of time. But physically he is better than I have ever seen him. He plays the last 10 minutes like he does the first 10. His strength and his ability to maintain the ball under pressure is as good as anyone in Europe. You can’t get the ball off the lad,” he explained.
However, Murphy believes that if Grealish “parties hard” in the summers, it will take its toll. “When I say it is a little bit concerning with what you see off the pitch near the end of the season. It was only for his longevity. Because if you are partying hard in the summers it does take its toll. I didn’t do it. I am talking at the level he is at this season. With his ability, he could play in the Premier League and do what he wants, for as long as he wants. I am talking about staying at the top of tree, which is playing for the best team in Europe,” he stated.
