Inter Milan and Bayern Munich will face off against each other in their opening group match of the 2022-23 Champions League campaign at San siro on Wednesday night. Both sides had earned direct qualification into the group stage of Europe’s elite club football competition courtesy of their impressive domestic league campaign last term. Inter Milan had secured a second-place finish in Serie A last season, while Bayern Munich won the 2021-22 Bundesliga title. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to AC Milan in a Serie A fixture last Saturday, while Bayern played out a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin in a German top-flight match on the same day.

Inter Milan haven’t made a great start to their 2022-23 Serie A campaign, losing two of their opening five games to be sitting at the eighth position in the table with just nine points. Their last match against Milan was a tightly-fought affair. Marcelo Brozovic gave the lead to Inter before Rfael Leao’s brace and Olivier Giroud goal helped Milan take a two-goal cushion. Although Edin Dzeko reduced the deficit, Milan held on to the slender lead and secured all three points.

Bayern, on the other hand, are unbeaten in their five league games so far, recording three wins and two draws to collect 11 points and sit at the third spot in the Bundesliga standings. The Bavarians shared the spoils against Union Berlin in their last outing after Sheraldo Becker’s opener was canceled out by Joshua Kimmich. The 2020 European champions were knocked out by Villarreal in the last-8 stage of the Champions League last season.
Inter Milan striker Romelu Lkukaku is sidelined with a thigh injury, therefore Dzeko is expected to be the target-man up front with Lautaro Martinez in support. Dumfries and Dimarco are likely to occupy the flanks with Barello, Brozovic and Calhanoglu forming the three-man midfield. As for Bayern, midfielder Leon Goretzka is back in the squad after recovering from a knee injury. Summer-signing Sadio Mane, who has already scored five times this season, is expected to lead the line with Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane in support.
