Australian forward Joel Chianese has reportedly extended his contract at Hyderabad FC. The 32-year-old played a key role in the Nizams winning the 2021-22 ISl title. He missed just four games for HFC last season. Chianese is an experienced footballer, having previously played in the A-League and Malaysia Super League before landing in the Indian shores. He was mostly used as an impact substitute by head coach Manolo Marquez. Meanwhile, because of injury problems, the forward played just 38 minutes in the ISL final, in which the Nizams defeated Kerala Blasters FC on penalties to lift the title. According to a recent report by Khel Now, the forward has signed one-year contract extension.

Chianese made 7 goal contributions last term

Chianese joined HFC in 2020 on a free transfer from A-League Men club Perth Glory. He has so far represented HFC in 31 ISL games, scoring seven times and registering four assists. Last season was his best as he netted four goals and provided three assists in 18 ISL appearances for the Nizams, playing alongside Bartholomew Ogbeche up front. He was deployed more as a second striker behind Ogbeche, with a license to roam around. He can also be used as an attacking midfielder and right winger.

Chianese won the ISL title in 2022

Hyderabad FC was formed in 2019 and after just three seasons, the Nizams clinched their first title. The reason for HFC’s quick success is their consistency in terms of player and coach retention. Marquez took charge of the club in 2020 and after missing the playoff by a whisker, the management decided to stick with the Spaniard for one more season. The core group of players were retained for the 2021-22 season and Chianese was one of them. HFC went on to secure second spot in the league phase before getting the better of ATK Mohun Bagan and KBFC to secure the title.

Hyderabad are retaining their core group of players

The Nizams have already extended the contract of head coach Marquez. Ogbeche, who won the ISL golden boot award last season is also reportedly set to sign a contract extension. With Chianese also being retained, Marquez will have his task cut short. Meanwhile right-back Ashish Rai has reportedly joined ATK Mohun Bagan on a five-year deal. Therefore the club has brought in Kerala full-back  Soyal Joshy, who won the Santosh Trophy, earlier this month.
