He was born on January 21, 1989, in Yerevan, Armenia. Mkhitaryan began his career at Pyunik Yerevan, where he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young players in Armenian football. He won three consecutive league titles with Pyunik, as well as two Armenian Cups, before moving to Ukraine to join Metalurh Donetsk in 2009.
