Millwall are set to begin their preparations for the upcoming Championship campaign on Saturday as they take on Gillingham in a friendly at Priestfield. The Lions, who missed out on a playoff spot by just a solitary point last season, will be hoping to go one step further this time around, while the hosts finished at the 17th spot in the last edition of the English fourth tier, and will be looking to challenge for a mid-table finish in the upcoming season.

Apart from Gillingham, Gary Rowett’s side will face off Sutton United, Charlton Athletic and Fortuna Sittard in friendlies before starting their 2023-24 Championship campaign away to Middlesbrough on August 5. Rowett has made two major signings thus far, bringing in left-back Joe Bryan on a free transfer and striker Kevin Nisdet for a alleged GBP 2M from Hibernian. The Lions finished eighth in the English second tier standings last season, having collected 68 points from 46 games, just one point adrift of the top six.
Gillingham, on the other hand, had a disappointing campaign last time around, managing to finish at the bottom half, nine points away from the drop zone. The Gills recorded just 14 wins from their 46 fourth tier games, and thereby collecting 55 points. Nevertheless, Neil Harris’ men have started the pre-season on a positive note, seeing off the challenge of Dover Athletic, and edging past Serie B side Como, thanks Dom Jefferies’s decisive goal two minutes from time. After the game against the Lions, Harris’ men will play five more friendlies against the likes of Charlton, Tonbridge, Dartford, Cambridge United and Dag & Red, before beginning their 2023-24 League Two season away to Stockport on August 5.
Millwall boss Rowett has spoken of his plan to mix up his players, combining experience with youth, to take a look at different combinations all over the pitch. Meanwhile, Harris used two different teams for the game against Italian outfit Como. Both managers are likely to rotate their squads and give ample game time to the players.
