Defender Gary Cahill has joined Bournemouth on a one-year deal. The 35-year-old left Crystal Palace after the expiry of his two-year contract. Therefore the defender has joined the Championship side on a free transfer. The former England international is a Champions League and English Premier League winner with Chelsea and his title-winning experience is going to be a significant boost for Bournemouth’s dreams of returning to the top-flight. Meanwhile, the center-back completed his medical on Thursday.

Cahill made 100 appearances for Bolton Wanderers before moving to Premier League club Chelsea in January 2012. He had a very successful seven-year stint at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League and FA Cup twice and the Champions League once. And then he moved to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019. “I’ve made a decision where I feel this is the best place for me to be at this stage of my career,” Cahill said.

The 1.93m tall center-back made his England senior team debut in September 2010 under Fabio Capello and then went on to make 61 appearances, scoring 5 goals. He also took part in two FIFA World Cups for the Three Lions in 2014 and 2018.

“I’d been in contact with the manager (Scott Parker) a few times over the summer, so I was aware he wanted to bring me to the club and I’m really looking forward to getting started,” Cahill said.

“I wanted something to challenge me and this is totally different. I think it’s been about 17 years since I last played in the Championship on loan.

“At the same time, I saw an opportunity to be involved in this journey. I saw the squad was very young and very talented with a good manager in place and ultimately, in and around promotion.

“I see that as a goal and a drive I want to get my teeth stuck into this season.”

Bournemouth are bolstering their squad

Bournemouth are unbeaten in the Championship so far with two wins and a draw in three games. Cahill could make his debut for his new club against Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday.

Cahill is the Bournemouth manager’s fourth signing since taking charge in June. Midfielder Emiliano Marcondes, goalkeeper Orjan Nyland and Leeds United loanee Leif Davies have also joined the Cherries. And with the arrival of Cahill, Parker certainly will have more solidity in defence.

Meanwhile, the Cherries are also hopeful of sealing a season-long deal for the Manchester City defender Morgan Rogers. The 19-year-old English youngster who started his career at West Brom has caught the eye of many during his impressive loan spell with Lincoln City in League one last season.

The arrival of Rogers could be a temporary replacement for Arnaut Danjuma, who joined Villarreal for GBP 20 million. The Netherlands winger had scored 17 goals for Bournemouth last season in the second tier.
