FC Zurich will host Linfield in the second leg of the Europa League third round qualification tie at Letzigrund on Thursday night. The first leg encounter at Windsor Park had ended 2-0 in favour of FC Zurich courtesy of goals from Tosin Aiyegun and Wilfried Gnonto. Both sides are heading into the crucial match on the back of disappointing defeats in their respective domestic games. Zurich were thrashed 3-0 by FC Sion in a Swiss Super League fixture last Sunday, while Linfield were beaten 2-0 by Crusaders in a NIFL Charity Shield final match a day earlier. The winners of this tie will face Scottish outfit Hearts in the playoff round later this month in a bid to progress to the Europa League group stage.

Zurich were dropped into the Europa League qualifiers after losing 5-4 on aggregate to Qarabag in Champions League Qualifying. The Swiss outfit didn’t have a great start to their domestic league campaign, losing three of their opening four games to be sitting at the bottom of the standings. Franco Foda’s side have failed to score in any of those four games. Linfield, on the other hand, won the Northern Ireland Football League title last term to earn a spot in the first round of Champions League Qualifying. The Blues got the better of the New Saints 2-1 on aggregate in the first round qualifier, before suffering a humiliating 8-1 aggregate defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the second qualifying round tie last month and got dumped out of the race for a place in the group stage of Champions League.
