The Fantasy Premier League is back in action for Gameweek 5 after the international break. Managers have been busy making adjustments and hoping that their key players return from international duty without any injuries. This gameweek brings arguably the most crucial captaincy choice thus far, especially with Erling Haaland and Manchester City facing a challenging away match against West Ham. So, who are the leading candidates?

Erling Haaland vs West Ham

Erling Haaland maintains his position as the top choice for expected points and can be considered immune to fixture difficulty. Recall his previous visit to the London Stadium? It was his debut Premier League match for Manchester City, during which he kicked off with a two-goal performance. Haaland’s underlying statistics continue to be remarkable, leading in both shots taken within the penalty box (20) and significant goal-scoring opportunities (seven). He has contributed six goals and an assist, making him the top-performing asset in FPL for the current season. Additionally, he is the first choice penalty taker.

Son Heung-min vs Sheffield United

Son caught the attention of fantasy managers with his hat-trick against Burnley in Gameweek 4, and if his role as the central striker for Spurs remains unchanged under Ange Postecoglou, he could become a valuable asset in fantasy football. This week, Spurs have a favorable fixture as they welcome Sheffield United, a team that has yet to keep a clean sheet this season, conceding seven goals. Son had five shots on target in his recent performance and is expected to be the primary penalty taker for the Spurs team.

Mohamed Salah vs Wolves

Salah is once more a strong contender for the captaincy, considering Liverpool’s upcoming away match against Wolves. He has consistently provided attacking returns in each of the first four gameweeks. While other midfielders may have matched his performance thus far, Salah possesses the star power to sustain this level of consistency. Salah is expected to remain the primary penalty taker if Liverpool are awarded one in Saturday’s early kick-off. However, there is some concern that he might be replaced as the penalty taker after his shot was saved in Gameweek 2 against Bournemouth, although he successfully converted the rebound. Salah has had four significant goal-scoring opportunities and leads in creating big chances.
