After another captivating round of Premier League matches, let’s delve into some remarkable statistics from Matchweek 4. During Saturday’s fixtures, a unique thing happened as three different players recorded hat-tricks: Son Heung-min, Erling Haaland, and Evan Ferguson. This remarkable feat had only happened once before, nearly 28 years ago, on September 23, 1995, when iconic goal-scorers Robbie Fowler, Alan Shearer, and Tony Yeboah all scored hat-tricks on the same day.

Erling Haaland’s hat-trick led him to a staggering 51 goal involvements in just 39 Premier League appearances, comprising 42 goals and 9 assists. This achievement shattered another Premier League record, surpassing Andrew Cole’s previous mark of reaching 50 goals or assists in 43 matches, making Haaland the quickest player to achieve this milestone in the competition. Notably, Haaland’s hat-trick occurred at the Etihad Stadium, marking his fifth hat-trick at this venue. Only four other players, all Premier League legends, have scored five or more hat-tricks at a single ground in the competition: Sergio Aguero (nine at the Etihad), Thierry Henry (eight at Highbury), Alan Shearer (seven at Ewood Park), and Robbie Fowler (six at Anfield).

Evan Ferguson Made History

Evan Ferguson joined elite company by becoming the fourth player, and the first in a quarter-century, to score a Premier League hat-trick at the age of 18 or younger. The previous players were Chris Bart-Williams, Robbie Fowler, and Michael Owen, who accomplished this feat on three occasions. In an unfortunate turn, Burnley’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur marked the fourth team this season to lose their first three Premier League matches, joining Everton, Luton Town, and Sheffield United. This season marked the first time in top-flight history that four different teams suffered such a start.

Declan Rice’s goal for Arsenal, scored at 95 minutes and 43 seconds, stands as the latest winning goal ever recorded in a Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester United. Gabriel Jesus extended his remarkable record in the Premier League. In the 57 matches where the Brazilian forward has scored, he has never experienced a Premier League defeat, securing 52 wins and five draws.

Chelsea’s loss at Stamford Bridge to Nottingham Forest marked their fifth home defeat in 2023, the most in a calendar year since 1995. To avoid matching their worst calendar year for home losses, when they lost seven times at Stamford Bridge in 1993, Chelsea needs to prevent two more defeats from their remaining seven home fixtures in 2023. Finally, West Ham United’s 2-1 win at Luton Town saw Jarrod Bowen became the first player to score in each of his first three away matches in a top-flight campaign since Vic Watson in 1930/31, while James Ward-Prowse became the first player to score or assist a goal in each of his first three Premier League appearances for West Ham.
