West Ham United could not have wished for a better ending to the 2022-23 campaign than to win a European trophy. There were periods in the season when the Hammers were flirting with relegation. However, they maintained their consistency in the Europa Conference League all season long. Be it in the group phase or the knockout stages, West Ham remained solid and looked like a team on a mission.
The end result was a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the final, as West Ham United lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy. What made the victory extra sweet for Czech footballer Vladimir Coufal is that the final had taken place in Prague. To see his current club, West Ham, lift the trophy in his home nation is a moment that will not leave Coufal’s memory any time soon.
“This is such a big moment in West Ham’s history. It’s beautiful. Everybody in the Club deserves it and that it has happened in Prague is even more emotional for me. It is massive. We win the games for the Czech Republic and then I will drink for a month,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.
It was not just special for Coufal but also for Tomas Soucek. They both are Czech Republic players and could be part of the country’s current international break. Coufal believed this victory must have been written in the stars, as he spoke about how great it was to see West Ham fans gathering in Prague in days leading up to the final.
“I think it was written in the stars for me and Tomáš from when we moved to West Ham. I don’t know how to describe this journey. It has been magnificent. [In the build-up to the game] when I saw on social media what is happening in the last few days in Prague, in the town square, everywhere was full of West Ham fans, I was so proud. They all deserve it!” he elaborated.
West Ham United’s records in this season’s Conference League was spectacular. He was really pleased with how the London outfit went about their business. “We won 14 games from the 15 and one draw, so it is not 100 per cent but we take that. And against Fiorentina, it was all about winning the game, and we did it! It is magnificent and I appreciate it so much. When I finish my career, I will always be connected with the West Ham community and I will be visiting West Ham games regularly with my wife, of course!” he added.
