Liverpool supporters have every reason to be excited about the start they have made to the new season. The Reds are unbeaten so far in the campaign after registering two wins and a draw from the opening three Premier League games. The come-from-behind victory over Newcastle United despite going down to 10 men was the standout result for them in the Premier League this season. It has certainly improved the mood at Anfield.

The Reds started with an opening-day draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before registering successive victories over Bournemouth and Newcastle United in the Premier League. Cody Gakpo, who was part of those fixtures, spoke about the satisfaction he has with the start the club has made. However, he does not want to stop as he is hungry for more in the upcoming games.

“I think we did quite well. Of course, there’s room for improvement, but to get a point at Stamford Bridge, even though we could’ve won the game, is still something to work with. And then two wins in a row is great, especially the last one [at Newcastle], it was really nice, [but] we have to keep working and keep winning. The mood was good, of course, but I think everybody realises it’s just the beginning of the season and we have to keep going. It’s not like we won two games and it’s done. We have to keep going and we are hungry for more,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

Does Cody Gakpo prefer to play as a No.8 or No.9?

Gakpo’s versatility has been lauded by many. Apart from being a wide man, he has played as a No.9 and even as No.8 for Liverpool. However, Gakpo is not focussed on one particular position, as he is ready to do what is best for the team. “I think it’s helpful for me and also for the team when it’s needed, but I think at the end it’s just about what is the best for the team to win the game. I think I played now in the eight and the nine. It’s just for me to improve in both positions. Obviously I played last season a lot as a nine, so that’s where I’m a little bit more used to playing. As an eight as well I can improve and then I can help the team more,” he explained. Liverpool will next take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

Speaking about the upcoming fixture, Gakpo said, “Every time it’s amazing. I think the fans are wonderful. They are so important to us, like you saw in the last home game. We were down with one goal and they just were trying to push us to get the equaliser and then eventually we won. It’s also because of them [that we won], so we have to give them more wins back. It’s a good team [Aston Villa], but we are as well. We have to just be ready and give it our best.”
