Real Madrid has confirmed that head coach Carlo Ancelotti has tested negative for COVID-19 and will travel to London for the Champions League quarter-final first leg clash against Chelsea on Wednesday. The Italian manager contracted the virus last week and didn’t travel to England with the rest of the squad on Tuesday. He also missed the team’s 2-1 La Liga win against Celta Vigo on Saturday. Meanwhile his son and assistant coach Davide Ancelotti was handed the charge in his absence.

“Real Madrid C.F is pleased to announce that our coach Ancelotti has returned a negative result for COVID-19, and will therefore travel to London this morning to join up with the first team,” Madrid said in a statement.

The Los Blancos are hoping to exact revenge on Chelsea after losing to the Premier League side in the Champions League semi-finals last year. The Spanish giants shouldn’t expect an easy game against the defending champions and beating them over two legs will not be easy for Ancelotti’s side.

Meanwhile it would be interesting to see how Chelsea would bounce back after the surprise 4-1 league defeat against Brentford on Saturday. The Bees put up an exhibition of quick counter-attacking football for which Thomas Tuchel’s side had no answer.

On the other hand, Real Madrid got back to winning ways against Celta Vigo after being thrashed 4-0 by Barcelona in the El Clasico on March 21. Karim Benzema netted a double from the penalty spot to take all three points for his team and extend their lead at the summit of the standings to 12 points.

The Frenchman has now found the back of the net 34 times across all competitions this campaign, which is his best numbers ever in a single season, and is certainly going to be the one player to watch out for at Stamford Bridge.
