Chelsea and Manchester City played out an exciting four-all draw in what was arguably the game of the Premier League weekend. The match had everything from goal-mouth scrambles, end-to-end action, VAR intervention and plenty of goals. The momentum kept shifting either way and, in the end, an injury-time penalty by Cole Palmer, former Man City player, shared the spoils in the eight-goal thriller.

After the match, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was extremely proud of his team’s performance, as he praised his players’ mentality. “I am very proud, so happy. The players deserve the praise because the performance this evening was amazing. We faced a team that for me is the best team in the world. There were too many circumstances that happened during the game that made me very proud, because the way that we managed the game was really good,” Pochettino, quoted on the club’s website, said after their Premier League draw against Manchester City.

He added: “Of course there are always things to improve but it is a process. It is a journey where we want to build a project from zero. This type of experience and games are very important and will improve a lot our players and our team, but now we need to use it and translate into the future. We are still far away from where we want to be, but this is the process. That is a different moment during this period, but of course this type of performance we need to use for the future. We are going step by step, but maybe we can jump two steps. But we need caution because today was a massive motivation and the fans and the crowd were amazing supporting us.”

What did Mauricio Pochettino like about the draw?

Chelsea came into the City game with a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the previous weekend. To get a draw against the defending champions after that match would be a big boost for them. “We showed the mentality, showed the character, showed also that we have the tools against a team like Manchester City to go for goals and to dominate and we have the capacity to create chances,” he explained.

He added: “I think today was really important. Like I said on Monday, maybe this is the starting point to start to build our confidence and believe more in the way that we are working. After today, now it is about translating into the way that we are going to compete in the future in this way,” he said.

The Chelsea manager is also confident that this type of performance will build belief and confidence in his players. “Now I am so tired after Monday and Sunday!’ he added. ‘But I think this type of performance is going to build the belief and the confidence to have patience in our approach to the games. That is the process with a young team. We have shown that we have quality, shown that we have good ideas, in how we approach the game and the belief and the mentality,” he stated.

He added: “We are a coaching staff who have experience but this type of game happens because you face a team like City, but with a Chelsea team that wants to win and wants to be protagonists. Afterwards everyone is so proud to be involved and see a game like today. These games are why people say the Premier League is the best league in the world.”
