Chelsea registered their first win of the 2023-24 Premier League season by easing past Luton Town 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. It was also the maiden victory for Mauricio Pochettino as the Blues manager. Chelsea were the favourites to get the job done in this match and they did it in some style on Friday night. A brace from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson’s first Chelsea goal helped the home side collect three valuable points.

It was a much-needed win for Chelsea following their opening weekend draw to Liverpool and a surprise defeat at the hands of West Ham United last weekend. The Blues now have four points from three Premier League matches this season. After the match, manager Mauricio Pochettino was happy with the performance of their star frontmen Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson. He started by showering praise on the English international.

Mauricio Pochettino on Raheem Sterling

“His commitment in the way he wants to contribute with the team, with his work ethic and quality, he deserves the full credit for his performance. We are very pleased and happy. He has the quality and he can provide the team goals and assists. And when we don’t have the ball, he works really hard to recover the ball as soon as possible. I’m so pleased for him. He told me last season was a difficult season for him, but I am very pleased when the player is happy. And when an offensive player can score or assist, for us it’s the best feeling,” Pochettino was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

“In our first conversation with all the players and our first conversation with Raheem, I love to ask the position that they love to play, to find out how they see themselves. It’s like putting the player in front of the mirror. It’s not in the end the position that is most important, it’s the combination and the way that the team is going to link in between them. It’s to find the best position in the dynamic of the game we are playing in an offensive situation, to find the best platform and position and link, so the player can provide their best quality. That is why the process is really important and time to work, because to create all these links in the way that we want to play and get to know each other, we need time.”

Mauricio Pochettino on Nicolas Jackson

Pochettino then shifted his attention to the other goal scorer Nicolas Jackson and said how pleased he has been with his performances so far. “We are not asking for him to run a lot and press and recover the ball, he dies it because it’s his quality. We saw when we signed him. That is fantastic because his work ethic is amazing, and then to have the quality because he is fast, runs in behind the defensive line and has the quality to get the ball into the feet,” he added.

“It was only a matter of time before he was going to score goals as well. It’s difficult to find a player like him in the market. For me he has the potential to be one of the great Premier League strikers. He only needs time and we won’t rush with him, we will give him time and space to grow. His qualities are fantastic.”
