Celta Vigo will be looking to get back to winning ways in the La Liga when they play host to Real Betis in their first fixture of the new year at Balaidos on Wednesday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat away to Villarreal almost two weeks ago, while the Green and Whites played out a 1-1 draw with title-challengers Girona last time out. The Sky Blues are currently languishing at the 18th spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 13 points from 18 games, two away from safety, while the visitors are sitting at the seventh position with 28 points to their name, just three shy of the top six.

Celta have recorded two wins, seven draws and nine defeats from 18 league games this season. Their last victory came against fellow strugglers Granada CF mid-way through last month thanks to Jorgen Strand Larsen’s lone goal inside the opening 20 minutes. The result extended their unbeaten run five games across all competitions, but the Sky Blues went into the Christmas break on the back of a defeat at El Madrigal. Rafa Benitez’s side conceded three goals before the 50-minute-mark, before fighting back to score twice through Anastasios Douvikas and Larsen, but they couldn’t find the elusive equaliser and their four-game unbeaten league run came to an end. Meanwhile, Os Celeste have won three of their last four encounters with Betis, including a narrow 1-0 win in last season’s home clash.

Since the 2-1 Copa del Rey success over lower division side Villanovense on December 6, Betis have recorded three draws and one defeat from their last four outings in all competitions. Los Verdiblancos’ last league-win came against Las Palmas towards the end of November. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are winless in their previous four top flight outings, taking four points in the period. Moreover, the Greens have drawn each of their last six road trips in the La Liga, leaving them without a top-flight away victory since beating Villarreal on the opening weekend of the season. El Gloriso secured a thrilling last ditch draw against second-placed Girona in their last match of 2023 courtesy of Germain Pezzella’s 89th-minute equaliser.
