Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick enroute to scoring his 300th Bayern Munich goal, as the Bavarians smashed five past Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The Polish striker also broke a club record set by the great Gerd Muller in 1970 by scoring in his 16th consecutive Bayern game. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Jamal Musiala and veteran Thomas Mueller also netted for the Bavarians at the Allianz Arena. Elsewhere in the other Bundesliga matches of the day, Cologne beat promoted Bochum while Mainz thrashed Greuther Fürth 3-0 and Eintracht Frankfurt were held 1-1 at Arminia Bielefeld.

Gerd Mueller, who died on August 15 at the age of 75, scored 547 goals in 597 competitive games during his 15 years at Bayern. Lewandowski’s latest goals ensured he has scored in every game for the last 13 Bundesliga matches.

The defending champions didn’t need long to get off the mark as German international Thomas Mueller opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Left-back Alphonso Davies laid the ball to Lewandowski inside the penalty area, and the Polish talisman cleverly left it to Mueller to score with a low shot inside the far post.

Almost 30 minutes after the goal, Lewandowski got his first one of the night with a towering header. The 33-year-old’s initial header from a Serge Gnabry’s cross hit the crossbar before the Poland star out-jumped two Herth Berlin defenders to head in the rebound from close range.

After the break, the home side continued from where it had left off. Musiala justified Julian Nagelsmann’s decision to start him ahead of a misfiring Leroy Sane. The youngster cut inside from the left side of the box and dispatched the ball inside the far post after Mueller had won the ball from Deyovaisio Zeefuik.

The winger got a standing ovation from the Bayern fans when he was substituted for Sane in the 61st minute.

Sane, who was whistled by Bayern fans for his poor performance against Cologne last weekend played a much better game as he set up Lewandowski for his second of the night. The 25-year-old cut inside past two Herth defenders on the left before playing a one-two with Mueller, and setting up the Polish forward to slot in from close range.

Lewandowski completed his hat-trick with a header in the 84th minute. Joshua Kimmich’s corner from the left flank was headed goalwards by Tanguy Nianzou at the far post, and Lewandowski headed in to complete the drubbing.

The win takes Bayern Munich to second in the table with seven points from 3 games. Bayern Leverkusen who beat Augsburg sit on top of the table with the same number of points as Bayern.

Bayer Levurkesen thrash Augsburg 4-1

In the other match of the day, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Augsburg 4-1 to continue their good form under new coach Gerardo Seoane.

Leverkusen raced to a two goal lead within 15 minutes courtesy of own-goals from defender Iago and forward Florian Niederlechner. Brazilian Iago chipped the ball over his own goalkeeper and into the net in the third minute before Niederlechner’s attempted block from Kerem Demirbay’s shot went inside the goal.

Although Niederlechner redeemed himself by pulling one back for the home side in the 30th minute, the away side scored two goals in the second half to seal the three points. Florian Writz, who recently celebrated his Germany recall, set up Patrik Schick in the 75th minute before scoring himself in the 81st.

Freiburg held on for a 3-2 win against Stuttgart while Cologne enjoyed a 2-1 win over promoted Bochum.

Mainz thrashed promoted Greuther Fuerth 3-0 at Mewa Arena, and Eintracht Frankfurt were held to a 1-1 draw by Arminia Bielefeld.
