Manchester United ended their home campaign in the Premier League with an important win. The Red Devils put behind their recent disappointments and produced a spirited display against Newcastle United. Despite fielding a completely changed line-up, largely due to injuries, the hosts did well to match the in-form visitors. It started with Kobbie Mainoo giving the lead for the home side in the first half but Anthony Gordon equalised for the visitors at the start of the second period.

Quickly after, Amad Diallo scored a stunner to put Manchester United back in front. Later, Rasmus Hojlund came on as a substitute and scored a brilliant third to put the home side in a comfortable 3-1 lead. Lewis Hall, however, reduced the deficit for the visitors late in the game. After seeing out few nervy moments, the Red Devils held on to win the Premier League game 3-2. Bruno Fernandes was one of the stars of the night for the hosts, as he produced another top-notch performance.

Erik ten Hag on Bruno Fernandes’ future

After the final whistle, manager Erik ten Hag was asked about Fernandes’ future at the club, as well as his importance to the team. “No, absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno. There is no question. He loves Manchester United, he loves the fans from Manchester United, and he loves to play for Manchester United,” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

The manager then went on to heap praise on the Portuguese star, saying he always wants to win. “You see he gives always his best. And he’s an example, even with injuries; he’s playing. He loves football. He wants to win, and I think that’s how I describe his character,” he elaborated.

Ten Hag also stated that how he was pleased with Fernandes’ performance on the night, as well as throughout the season. “I’m very pleased with his performance. And [his] performances across the season, because, for him, it’s not easy when so many players are injured around him, and every time he has to carry the team. But then, for him, he keeps a good level, and I would say even a high level, especially in the spring, he grows to a brilliant level. I’m very pleased with it,” he elaborated.

The manager also gave an update on the players returning from injuries. “We have players returning but it’s also match fitness. We have to find the right balance and, also, some players can deal with this, some players maybe less so. We have to see but all the players are desperate to go to Wembley, to win the cup, but, first of all, we have to win the game at Brighton. That is the main focus,” he stated.
