Bristol City get their pre-season underway with a warm-up match against former Championship rivals Reading at Robins High Performance Centre on Wednesday afternoon. The Robins are getting ready for their ninth successive season in the Championship, while the Royals suffered elimination last term and are set to compete in the upcoming Football League One campaign. Ruben Selles’ side have already started their pre-season, losing 1-0 to Wimbledon in a friendly last weekend.

Bristol City secured a 14th-place finish in the English second tier standings last season, having collected 59 points from 46 games. Head coach Nigel Pearson knows that he needs to provide an improved effort in 2023-24 to justify his spot in the dugout. As it stands, the Robins have successfully signed the likes of Rob Dickie, Ross McCrorie and Hayden Roberts from Queens Park Rangers, Aberdeen and Brighton & Hove Albion in order to bolster their defence. Meanwhile, promising midfielder Alex Scott is expected to make a big money move to the Premier League. Therefore, the money generated from the 19-year-old’s transfer would help the club strengthen their attacking department. Pearson’s side will play couple of friendlies later this month before kicking off their Championship campaign at home to Preston North End on August 5.
Reading, on the other hand, are bidding to make an immediate return to the Championship under the stewardship of new boss Selles, who will not be able to sign new players until a tax bill has been paid to HMRC, effectively leaving the former Southampton coach in a position where he must promote a batch of academy players. A team which themselves acknowledged as “youthful”, suffered a narrow loss to AFC Wimbledon in Spain on Saturday, courtesy of Josh Neufville’s lone goal on the stroke of half-time. The result extended their winless run to 14 games across all competitions. Selles’ side will face couple of Championship side’s as part of their pre-season this month, before beginning their League One campaign against Peterborough on August 5.
Pearson has a fully fit squad at his disposal, therefore the 59-year-old is likely to give playing time to all of his senior players. Amid interests from Tottenham, Bournemouth and West Ham United, Scott’s game time might be restricted. Selles, on the other hand, named two separate sides for the game with AFC Wimbledon, his senior crop all featuring during the first-half. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Spaniard is likely to mix and match allowing academy graduates to test themselves against the big boys.
