Brighton thrashed Grimsby Town 5-0 in the quarter-final match last month thanks to Evan Ferguson’s brace and one goal each from Deniz Undav, Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma. Prior to that, the Seagulls overcame the likes of Liverpool, Stoke City and Middlesbrough, thus reaching their first FA Cup semi-finals since the 2018-19 campaign, where they were sent packing 1-0 by eventual winners Manchester City. Brighton are having a pretty good league campaign, as they are sitting at the eighth spot in the English top tier standings, having taken 49 points from 29 games, just four points adrift of fourth placed Tottenham Hptspur, who have played two games more. Meanwhile, Roberto de Zerbis’s side secured all three points against the Blues at Stamford Bridge last Saturday courtesy of Danny Welbeck’s 42nd-minute equaliser and Julio Enciso’s winner 20 minutes from time.
Manchester United, on the other hand, incredibly secured 3-1 wins against all four of their FA Cup fixtures against the likes of Everton, Reading, West Ham United and Fulham this season. But their most recent outing for a semi-final ended in a defeat to Chelsea in 2019-20. Erik ten Hag’s side are currently sitting at the third position in the Premier League standings, with 59 points to their name from 30 games. Nevertheless, the Red Devils lost out to Sevilla in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday night courtesy of Youssef En Nesyri’s brace and one goal from Loic Balde. The defeat meant that United’s dreams of a continental crown is over, but the prospect of emulating Liverpool’s EFL Cup and FA Cup double from last year is very much still alive.
