Birmingham will be bidding to put their first points on board under the stewardship of Wayne Rooney when they play host to Ipswich Town in an EFL Championship fixture at St Andrew’s on Saturday. Both sides suffered 3-1 defeats in their last outings, with the hosts losing out to Southampton in the league last weekend, while the Tractor Boys lost out to Fulham in the EFL Cup round of 16 tie in the mid-week. The Blues are currently occupying 14th spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 18 points from 14 matches, while the visitors have a game in hand and are sitting at the second position, with 34 points to their name, just five points adrift of leaders Leicester City.

Birmingham started the month of October with back-to-back wins over Huddersfield Town and West Bromwich Albion, scoring seven goals and conceding just two in the process. But since then, the Blues have suffered three successive defeats against the likes of Middlesbrough, Hull City and Southampton. The management decided to part ways with manager John Eustace after the defeat to Boro, and Wayne Rooney was brought in to replace the 44-year-old tactician. Rooney’s first outing with Birmingham ended in a 2-0 defeat against Hull on October 25, and three days later the former Manchester United striker took his team to the St Mary’s Stadium. As expected by the majority of home supporters, the Saints raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 22 minutes thanks to Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Carlos Alcaraz. Although Rooney’s side pulled one back through Jay Stansfield’s 58th-minute effort, Adam Armstrong’s 86th-minute strike sealed Birmingham’s sixth second tier defeat of the campaign.
Ipswich, on the other hand, have lost only one league match this season and that was way back in August, while they have won 11 of their 13 second tier games so far. Last Saturday, the Tractor Boys secured a thrilling 3-2 league victory over Plymouth Argyle thanks to one goal each from Bali Mumba, George Hirst and Marcus Harness. Four days later, Kieran McKenna’s side welcomed Fulham for their EFL Cup round of 16 tie, but a second string side lost the match, with Elkan Baggott scoring a consolation goal ten minutes from time. Nevertheless, Ipswich can now completely shift their focus to the Championship, where they have made a stunning start and are in a strong position to dream about back-to-back promotions.
