The first leg at Sardegna Arena on Wednesday saw Bari snatch a last-gasp equaliser through Mirco Antenucci's 96th-minute penalty kick after Gianluca Lapadula put Cagliari ahead inside the opening nine minutes.
Bari will host Cagliari in the second leg of their Serie B promotion playoff final at Stadio San Nicola on Sunday. The first leg at Sardegna Arena three days ago ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw. Gianluca Lapadula gave an early lead to Cagliari and they were well on their way to winning the home-leg, but Biancorossi managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat courtesy of Mirco Antenucci’s 96th-minute penalty kick. Michele Mignani’s men were clearly the dominant side in Sardinia having more more than 55% ball possession, attempting 22 shots, with nine of them on target.

Bari earned promotion to the Italian second division only last season following several years in the wilderness . And now, Mignani’s men are aiming to secure back-to-back promotions, which would be a remarkable achievement for Galletti. Biancorossi finished third in the Serie B standings before overcoming Suditrol on away goals in the semifinal playoff to book a place in the final. Courtesy of a superior finish in the second tier points table Mignani’s side now simply need to avoid losing their two-legged playoff tie on aggregate to achieve promotion to the Serie A. Meanwhile, Bari have been impressive at Stadio San Nicola, not tasting defeat in their last nine home matches, recording five wins and as many clean sheets in the process.
Cagliari, on the other hand, would consider themselves unfortunate to concede a last-ditch equaliser in front of their own supporters on Wednesday night. And now, they need to go all out for the win in Sardinia in order to return to the top division at the first time of asking. Claudio Ranieri’s men finished fifth in the Serie B points table before defeating Parma 3-2 on aggregate to progress to the promotion playoff final. The Islanders can take confidence from the fact that they are heading into the match on the back of an eight-game unbeaten streak, recording six successive win across April and May, before sharing the spoils against Parma in the second leg of their semi-final playoff tie and then played out a 1-1 draw against Bari last time out.
