Atletico suffered their sixth league-defeat of the season against Barcelona on Sunday courtesy of Ferran Torres’s lone goal on the stroke of half-time. The result ended Los Colchoneros’s six-game winning streak. With Real Betis and Villarreal also both losing at the weekend, the gap remains 12-points between them and Atletico. With eight games remaining, Champions League qualification is almost certain for Diego Simeone’s side. The Mattress Makers have been pretty good both home and away in the La Liga this term, having taken 30 points from 15 matches at Metropolitano and 30 points from 15 games on the road.
Mallorca, on the other hand, secured all three points against Getafe last time out thanks to Lee Kang-in’s brace and one goal from Antonio Arenas. It was their 11th victory of the season and the result extended their unbeaten run to four games in the top flight, winning two in the process. Other than Barcelona, Vermilion are the only other team who have beaten Atletic since November. The reverse fixture in November last year ended 1-0 in favour of Javier Aguirre’s side thanks to Vedat Muriqi’s first-half effort. It was the Mallorca’s third consecutive victory against Simeone’s side.
