Manchester United supporters have every reason to be excited about how the summer transfer window is progressing. They have already made two quality first team additions. Mason Mount has made the switch from fellow Premier League rivals Chelsea, while Andre Onana has joined the Red Devils from Serie A giants Inter Milan. It is Onana’s arrival that has got the fans most excited due to the goalkeeper’s unique style of play.

Unlike traditional goalkeepers, Onana does not stay in the goal line all the time. He is not afraid to drop out of the penalty box to involve himself in the team’s buildup play. He is excellent with his distribution from the back, which is something that has been received well among the Manchester United supporters. Explaining in detail about his playing style, Onana told the club media, “I’m very comfortable playing from the back but it depends. I think the most important thing is to recognise the situation and that’s what I do myself: read the situation, especially what the team needs in certain moments.”

He added: “When we play, depending on who we play, sometimes you have the possession and sometimes not, so from there you have to be smart and try to help the team. Because most of the time playing with these players is amazing. I had my first training session with them and it’s just amazing the quality here. It’s great. I think a lot of the time we will have possession. Sometimes I have to play higher and sometimes I have to drop. It’s just the moments and you have to recognise those moments and from there on, we look forward. But I look at myself as a modern goalkeeper, so I can adapt to any situation.”

Onana’s switch to Manchester United has been received amazing well in his home nation, Cameroon. Detailing about it, the goalkeeper said, “It’s amazing. You can’t understand [the reaction in my home country] even if I explained. The thing is, Cameroon, you divide it by two: you have the English side and the French side.”

“The English side, they are all fans of Man United, so you can imagine this is something amazing for all of us. They are very happy and they are proud. And it’s all the continent, because I have friends almost everywhere in Africa and their reaction is amazing. They are texting me and they are already writing to me and it’s amazing. It’s amazing for us, it’s great, and now it’s time to work and to win trophies.”

Andre Onana on Erik ten Hag This will be the second time Onana will be working with manager Erik ten Hag. The duo was also together during their Ajax days. “We have done a lot of great things together. We reached the semi-finals of the Champions League at Ajax and it was not something easy. Doing this with a smaller club like Ajax is something you do every 20 or 25 years. We have a good relationship and he’s a top coach; for me he’s one of the best in the world. But it’s not about saying it, it’s time to demonstrate it. But I’m sure with the team and the spirit we have, we’ll fight for it, and I hope we’re going to be successful here,” he explained.
