Arsenal supporters would have been delighted with the announcement that the club extended the contract of one of their key senior players, Jorginho. The Italian star has enjoyed a positive spell at Emirates Stadium after joining them on an 18-month deal from Chelsea in January of last year. Being the focal point of the team’s midfield, the 32-year-old has already shown his full potential on multiple occasions.

Hence, the latest contract extension by Jorginho would have left the club’s faithful pleased. He arrived with a massive amount of experience following his successful recent years with Chelsea and the Italian national team. The deep-lying midfielder carried that form to the Emirates and has delivered the goods whenever he has been called to perform by Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta on Jorginho’s contract extension

The Arsenal manager only had good words to describe about Jorginho’s contract extension. “I think there are no questions about his contribution to a team, the way he feels about his teammates, about the club and the way we play. He’s someone who makes everybody better – that’s his main quality. He’s still hungry, he wants to win, he wants to win with us, he’s happy here and his family is happy here, so for us it was a really easy decision,” Arteta, quoted on Arsenal.com, said ahead of their Premier League fixture against Manchester United.

He added: “He is a very important player for all the coaches because his game understanding and the way he communicates and coaches people is excellent. You need those types of players but on top of that I think as a role model, it’s very difficult to find somebody better than him. When he needs to be at it and serious and drive people with him he does it, and when it needs fun and a relaxing atmosphere, he is one of the best. It’s a good combination.”

Arteta then went into detail to explain the influence Jorginho has on the squad. At 32 years, the Italian is one of the senior members in the squad and plays an important role in driving his teammates. “First of all, as a player on the pitch, he’s a phenomenal player and gives us so much. For the rest of the qualities that he has to bring to the team, to the squad, to the club, to our culture, I think we are delighted to have him,” Arteta said.

Speaking on his character, the manager said, “It’s impossible not to like him in any way, as he’s a super special person. A great family man with a lot of experiences and he knows how to talk to people, he knows how to inspire people and certainly he knows very well how to drive a team and be part of a really important team.”
