Tottenham striker Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick  to help his side secure a 4-0 Premier League win against Aston Villa at the Villa Park on Saturday. The Korean international has now scored 17 goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season, only behind Mohammad Salah, who has netted 20 times, in the race for the Golden Boot. Despite being a consistent goal-scorer for Spurs in the last couple of seasons, the 30-year-old is often under-rated and has been in the shadows of English superstar, Harry Kane.

Most of the media attention has been on Kane, rightly so, because of the number of goals he has been scoring for both club and country. To Kane’s credit, he kept delivering season after season, and the England captain was often regarded as the torchbearer of the London club. But it would be harsh to say that Kane has single-handedly carried Spurs forward.

Son has been a consistent goal scorer and assist provider for Spurs since in the 2016-17 season. The Korean joined the Premier League club in August 2015 from Bayern Leverkusen. After a poor first season where he managed to score just four league goals, he has grown into one of most reliable attackers in English top flight football.

The 2016-17 season was a breakthrough season for Son, finding the back of the net 21 times across all competitions and from then on, he has delivered in every single season. Last campaign, Son finished with 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 league appearances, fourth in the race for the golden boot, which was won by his teammate Kane, who netted 23 times.

Meanwhile, this campaign, surprisingly Kane hasn’t been at his usual best having scored just 12 goals in 30 league appearances, which isn’t a great number by his high standards. However, Son has grown into the main striker in Spurs’ attack and his combination with Kane and January signing Dejan Kulusevski is proving to be decisive in the club’s race for the Champions League qualification.

Tottenham are in very good form

The win against Aston Villa has helped Antonio Conte’s side to tighten grip on the fourth spot, giving them a three point cushion over Arsenal, who lost 2-1 against Brighton and slipped to the fifth place.

Conte’s side are currently in very good form, having won all of their last four league games, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two. Son’s contribution in three of those four victories has been crucial as he netted six times and registered one assist.

At present, Spurs look like the most in-form team in the league, the front-three of Son, Kane and Kulusevski is firing on all cylinders and the defence, led by Christian Romero looks settled and solid. With seven more games to go, Spurs are very well in the race to achieve a top-four finish.
